1) Biologging Solutions Joins a Project to Advance Environmental Impact Assessments for Offshore Wind Power
— Enabling both decarbonization and nature-positive outcomes through biologging and biodiversity big data —
January 20, 2026
Biologging Solutions, Inc. has launched a joint project with Think Nature Inc. and Koudou Lab to advance environmental impact assessments (EIA) for renewable energy development, including offshore wind power. The project is advised by Professor Katsufumi Sato of the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, The University of Tokyo.
In this project, we will integrate (1) wildlife behavior and movement data collected through biologging technologies developed by Biologging Solutions with (2) biodiversity big data held by Think Nature. By combining these datasets, we will conduct macroecological analyses that visualize habitat-use and movement areas at high resolution, including information at the individual-animal level.
This integrated approach will enable quantitative, wide-area impact assessments, including:
- Spatial overlap between offshore wind facilities and suitable habitats / behavioral areas of wildlife
- Collision risks such as bird strikes
- Broader, cumulative impacts of multiple developments across regions
Project Significance
As Japan accelerates GX (Green Transformation), implements the National Biodiversity Strategy, and advances the transition to a nature-positive economy, this project will deliver the following value:
- Scientific enhancement and improved transparency of the EIA process
- More concrete guidance for biodiversity considerations in renewable energy deployment
- Scientific evidence that supports TNFD- and ESG-related assessments
- Objective, quantitative data that contributes to local consensus building
Biologging Solutions’ Role
For more than a decade, Biologging Solutions has supported the development and manufacturing of GPS collars, miniature loggers, and various sensors, as well as cloud-based data management, mapping, alerts, and reporting. In this project, we will leverage this expertise to lead end-to-end work—from wildlife data acquisition to analysis and visualization.
We will continue to convert collected data into actionable intelligence, contributing to the realization of a decarbonized society while advancing nature-positive outcomes.
Next Steps
In the initial phase, we will use existing biologging datasets to organize and visualize spatial overlaps with wind facilities and risks along movement routes. In the medium to long term, we will accumulate evidence through pilot cases focused on offshore wind, and accelerate real-world implementation—aiming to inform institutional design, guideline development, and sustainable investment decision-making.
